LockDown Browser Privacy Policy Supplement
Last Updated: June 25, 2026
Effective Date: July 24, 2026
This LockDown Browser Privacy Policy Supplement provides details about how LockDown Browser Processes Personal Information of Students. It specifically addresses information Processed through LockDown Browser and does not apply to other Respondus Services. It is part of and incorporated into the Privacy Policy. You should read them both carefully.
For simplicity, terms used here have the same definitions as in our Privacy Policy unless otherwise noted below.
LockDown Browser Processes information strictly on behalf of and in accordance with the written instructions of our end customers.
What Using LockDown Browser Means to You
LockDown Browser is a client-based application that "locks down" a computer or device during an online exam and is accessed from within a learning or assessment platform (“Learning System”) such as a learning management system (LMS) or publisher system. LockDown Browser Processes information strictly on behalf of and in accordance with the written instructions of our end customers, consisting primarily of Institutions. Respondus acts as a data processor on the behalf of our customers. Our customers agree not to use LockDown Browser in any way that conflicts with or violates any applicable law.
In our standard use case, our customer is an Institution whose Students, Instructors, and Administrators access LockDown Browser from within one of our standard Learning System integrations. In these instances, Respondus directly integrates LockDown Browser with a Learning System, typically through a plugin or tool that operates via application programming interfaces and webhooks (collectively, “API”s). In other instances, our customer is a Learning System technology provider who performs the role of the Institution for the purposes of this LockDown Browser Privacy Policy Supplement.
The Institution's Instructors use LockDown Browser to access a particular online exam and, in some situations, make or recommend decisions about whether an exam violation has occurred. Administrators are responsible for the Institution’s license of LockDown Browser and the integration of LockDown Browser with other systems used by the Institution.
Respondus permits certain technology partners (“SDK Partners”) to license, embed, and distribute the LockDown Browser technology for use with their proprietary assessment systems. Respondus may receive anonymized data from such SDK Partners for intellectual property protection and license management purposes.
The remainder of this LockDown Browser Privacy Policy Supplement applies exclusively to our standard use case and not to our SDK Partners.
Information Regarding the Personal Information Processed by LockDown Browser
There are three instances where LockDown Browser Processes a Student’s Personal Information: when a Student uses the “Help Center” to troubleshoot a technical issue with LockDown Browser, when a Student uses the “Early Exit” feature, and when LockDown Browser detects that its security protections may have been compromised, tampered with, or bypassed.
When a Student uses the Help Center within LockDown Browser, the application runs analytic tests and generates log files, and then the Help Center enables the Student to email the information to an address of the Student’s choosing, including Respondus Technical Support. Respondus Processes the Student’s email address when the Student sends the analytic tests and log files to Respondus Technical Support, as well as any other Personal Information the Student chooses to provide in the email, including the Student’s name.
When a Student uses the Early Exit feature, the Student will terminate an assessment before it is completed, and the Student will be prompted to give a reason for terminating early. Respondus collects the Student’s Learning System identification number and reason for terminating early so that it can provide the Student’s reason for terminating to the Student’s Instructor.
When LockDown Browser detects that its security protections may have been compromised, tampered with, or bypassed, Respondus Processes the Student’s first and last name, Learning System identification number, Institution identification number, course name, and exam name. Respondus may also restrict the Student’s ability to use LockDown Browser. When LockDown Browser detects this activity, Respondus shares this information with the Student’s Institution.
