Rapid Rollout of Respondus Monitor & LockDown Browser for Administrators

The following resources are available to administrators for rapid deployment of Respondus Monitor and LockDown Browser.

Admin Steps for Enabling Respondus Monitor on the LMS

1) Locate and review the license administrator welcome email for LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor.

2) Log into the Administrator Area of Respondus.com. Follow the instructions provided with the welcome email and go to: Respondus.com > Customer Login > LockDown Browser & Respondus Monitor Product Area

3) Review the Administrator Guides for both LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor (available from the Administrator Area mentioned above).

4) Create a server profile for your LMS server, following the directions in the Administrator Guide for LockDown Browser

5) Enable Respondus Monitor. From the administrator area, select Control Panel > Create New Server Profile (or select an existing one) > Modify Settings > Terms of Use. Accept the Terms of Use and select “Yes” for Enable Respondus Monitor for this server.

6) Install the LockDown Browser LTI or plugin to the LMS using the directions in the Administrator Guide

7) Select “Click here to test the integration” to ensure everything is working correctly.

8) Communicate information to instructors and trainers, as described in the Administrator guide. Be sure to explain where they will find the LockDown Browser Dashboard in the LMS, and provide the unique URL to be used by students for downloading and installing LockDown Browser. Respondus offers frequent training webinars for instructors and staff on LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor.

Security Resources

The following resources provide the information most institutions require:

  • Respondus has achieved SOC 2 Type 1 certification, which is formal evidence that its systems and processes are properly designed to keep its clients’ sensitive data secure. The most recent certification occurred in December 2019.
  • Respondus is a HECVAT participant, which is an EDUCAUSE initiative where vendors provide detailed information on security and data protection as it relates to cloud services and software applications. Respondus’ HECVAT is available upon request by filling out this form.
  • Respondus has PCI-compliance scanning performed quarterly by a third-party service.
  • Respondus has third-party penetration testing performed on LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor on a regular basis. Results have consistently shown that Respondus’ applications and services are well-designed and utilize an effective security model.
  • Respondus has monthly vulnerability scanning by a third-party service, and intrusion detection and prevention systems continuously monitoring all servers and network resources.
  • Respondus engineers with AWS administrator-level access have achieved AWS Solutions Architect certification or higher.
  • Over 1500 institutions have implemented Respondus Monitor (over 2,200 for LockDown Browser). The architecture and security has been closely vetted by hundreds of institutions, including some of the largest online learning programs in the world.

Privacy Resources (including FERPA)

Respondus takes data privacy seriously. Our main mantra is “collect as little personal information as possible.” Additional information is provided below.

  • Respondus Privacy Center: respondus.com/privacy . Here you will find the Respondus Privacy Policy, our Data Processing Agreement, and detailed information about what information is collected by LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor.
  • The Respondus Monitor Terms of Use is the official word on privacy, but the following document (one page) answers most privacy questions asked by instructors and students: Data Privacy Overview
  • Respondus adheres to the U.S. Privacy Shield framework.
  • Respondus is GDPR compliant, which is mainly relevant for European customers.

Data Retention Policy

Respondus Monitor videos can be stored for up to 5 years. If your institution requires a specific data retention policy (e.g., 2 years, 30 days), please open ticket with Respondus Technical Support.

Terms of Use

There are two “Terms of Use” for Respondus Monitor, one for the institution, and another for the student using the service. Both are described below.

  • Terms of Use (Institution) – This TOU is between Respondus and the institution. The license administrator can view and accept this TOU by going to: Respondus.com > Customer Login > LockDown Browser & Respondus Monitor > Respondus Monitor: Control Panel > Create New Server Profile (or select an existing one) > Modify Settings > Terms of Use. Once the Terms of Use is accepted, select “Yes” to Enable Respondus Monitor for this server. This terms of use is also available here.
  • Terms of Use (Student) – This TOU is between Respondus Inc. and the student using Respondus Monitor. It must be accepted each time Respondus Monitor is used. For quick reference, the student TOU is available here

System Requirements, Supported LMSs, Supported OSs

  • Windows and Mac: See the system requirements (Students) and supported learning systems on the Respondus Monitor Resources page.
  • iPad Users – The Respondus Monitor settings have an iPad option that must be enabled on a per exam basis. Instructors often don’t permit students to use an iPad with Respondus Monitor unless they place it on a stand and use an external keyboard (the video recording has too much motion otherwise.)   • Mobile Phones – LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor aren’t available for use on mobile phones, such as the iPhone or Android phones. (Many LMSs don’t support exams taken on mobile phones either.)

Support Resources and Live Chat

  • Respondus Support - The best way for a license administrator to get assistance with a technical issue is to open a support ticket. Our goal is to respond to support tickets within a few business hours, but please be patient during these unusual times.
  • Knowledgebase – Here you’ll find answers to frequently asked questions, and even a few obscure ones.
  • Help Center – This is available within Respondus Monitor itself and helps students troubleshoot technical issues (webcam, microphone, internet connection, etc.) and get technical assistance.
  • 24/7 Live Chat for Students – Students having technical problems with Respondus Monitor can initiate a live chat with Respondus Support. This 24/7 service is available within Respondus Monitor and is accessed from “Help Center” and the “It’s Not Working” links that appear in the pre-exam startup steps.

Why does Respondus Monitor require the use of LockDown Browser?

LockDown Browser locks down the computer or device used to take the exam. When used by itself, LockDown Browser is intended for proctored environments (eg. computer labs, classrooms).

Respondus Monitor is an automated proctoring system that builds on the LockDown Browser technology. It additionally uses a student’s webcam to record the student during a non-proctored exam. Proctoring results are available to the instructor after the exam.

What is the LockDown Browser Dashboard?

The LockDown Browser Dashboard is the tool in the LMS where instructors access the settings for LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor, including the proctoring results. With most LMS integrations it’s an LTI tool.
